Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Columbus – Four Horizon Science Academy charter schools improperly paid board members for attending board meetings, according to audits of the schools released today by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

Bylaws at the four schools prohibit board members from receiving compensation. However, during fiscal year 2015, some board members were paid for attending board meetings. The following board members received payments in the amounts listed below:

  • Marie Bonilla (Horizon Science Academy - Lorain) - $625
  • Hamiyet Unal (Horizon Science Academy Denison Elementary School) - $500
  • Donald Malloy (Horizon Science Academy Denison Middle School and Noble Academy - Cleveland) - $500
  • Ayhan Duzgun (Horizon Science Academy Denison Middle School and Noble Academy - Cleveland) - $375

Findings for recovery were issued against the board members in the above amounts. The charter school management company, Concept Schools, repaid the findings for recovery on behalf of the board members in the total amount of $2,000 on December 17, 2015.
